When/if he wakes up he will find his son is gone, could you imagine anything worse than that? They then proceed to Mateos best friends house so he can say goodbye to her and his goddaughter. They spend it visiting various different places starting with Mateos dad who is in a coma and actually this is kind of the saddest thing. They meet up very soon after and start their last day together. To start with Mateo gets some pretty horrible messages asking for pot, sex, if he has a couch and just spam until he finds Rufus and messages him. They both sign up for an app called Last Friend, the idea is to find someone to spend time with so you don’t have to spend your last day alone. They are both very different people but both have pretty sad family backstories. Rufus is literally beating some guy up when he gets the call. Mateo is a guy that pretty much stays in his room all the time and is very anxious and paranoid. The two main characters of this story get the Death-Cast call on the same day. Its also horrible to imagine that people will treat you as if you are already dead that whole day. Catering to the dying masses has also become a bit of an industry, for example there are apps that help connect people, museums that show you the world and virtual reality experiences to make your last day a good experience. I think it also made people less sensitive to dying. Especially if it was in an accident and I was perfectly healthy when I got the call. Personally I think this is horrible, I would not want to know if I was going to die. The idea is that knowing you are going to die allows you to say all your goodbyes and do anything you want to before you die. We have no idea how they get this information but it has never been wrong. They call people between midnight and 3am to let them know that they will die today. Basically a company called Death-Cast have figured out what days people will die on. The premise of this book was really interesting and made me think so much about life and death. I was hooked from page one and was desperate to know what would end up happening at the end. I read it super quickly and could have finished it in one sitting. I really enjoyed this book, I would say this is my favourite Adam Silvera book so far! I really liked the mix of Sci-Fi and contemporary. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure – to live a lifetime in a single day. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but for different reasosn, they’re both looking for a new friend on their End Day. The good news: there’s an app for that.
